If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to be in a 54 Below audience with Annie Golden, you are missing out. I will admit to being biased a bit, since her status as cast member of the film version of Hair makes her close to a goddess in my book. But I don’t think there’s a single performer in NY (or likely the rest of the world) who takes such joy at seeing other people succeed. She’s become part of the Joe Iconis family —she’s appearing in The Black Suits in Los Angeles, and Joe is currently writing a musical for her that I believe is called Annie Golden, Bounty Hunter.
Anyway, Annie was in the audience for Joe’s show on Friday night, and she was just kvelling from the minute it started to the minute it ended. Marc Shaiman made a guest appearance, and Annie grabbed her camera to snap a picture of Marc on stage with Joe. Jen Tepper then grabbed her camera to take a picture of Annie taking a picture of Marc. So of course Annie then took a picture of Jen taking a picture of her. And I’m pretty sure Annie took pictures of us “regular folk” in the audience as well, just because she was having such a wonderful time.
During Marc’s onstage banter with Joe, he praised Joe for not only being a fantastic songwriter, but for successfully bringing heterosexuality to the musical theater. Annie, of course, at that point screamed from her seat, well, you can listen above. Hilarious. (And said with love.)
Seriously, when I see Annie Golden it takes all my self control not to run over to her and fan-vomit about how many times I listened to her sing “Frank Mills” on my double-LP of the soundtrack and then give her a big hug. No promises that I won’t do that at some point in the future.
