As for Sandy’s transformation, in the shooting script there was actually a reason why she appeared at the graduation carnival looking like a biker chick. The end-of-the-year party was originally set in “Wonder World Amusement Park,” and, as Principal McGee announces over the public address system, the theme is “Favorite Image Day—Come as the person you most admire or the thing you’d like to be.” Sandy apparently seizes the opportunity to transform herself. As for the other characters, Frenchy arrives wearing a dental hygienist’s smock, Putzie and Jan are Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Sonny and Doody appear in army uniforms, Kenickie and Rizzo are dressed like a bride and groom, and Danny is ‘dressed as Pat Boone, perma-pressed slacks and all. He’s had his hair cut and is the epitome of the All-American boy.’ ‘I’m phasing into the world,’ he tells his friends.
Stephen Tropiano, describing the final draft of the Grease shooting script, in his book GREASE: Music On Film.
A critic’s job is to evaluate two things: what you are attempting to do and how close do you come to pulling it off. Highbrow, lowbrow, Shakespeare, Williams, movies like The Hangover, movies like Lincoln, they all deserve the same fate. If it’s trash, then call it. But is it good trash or is the bar too low? Then call it. Is the piece ambitious and groundbreaking? Factor that in. But never say “why bother?’
