London Revival Cast,
Irene - 1976 London Cast
Julie Anthony sings Wally Harper and Jack Lloyd’s “The World Must Be Bigger Than an Avenue” from the 1976 London revival cast recording of Irene.
The revised show opened on Broadway with Debbie Reynolds (and later Jane Powell) to mixed notices, but still managed a healthy run of 594 performances. The London production lasted 974 performances. Anthony also performed the show in her native Australia.
This is a favorite song of mine, and although I think Barbara Cook really owns it, Anthony certainly makes her case.
Company (1970 Boston)
You may know that David Shire was called up to Boston during the out of town tryout of Company to write a last-minute replacement dance piece, now known as “Tick-Tock.” You might not yet have heard the original piece by Wally Harper it replaced. Here it is.
I am proud that two years in I am still posting things that are relatively rare and not otherwise showing up on Tumblr.
The Champion Season
I never paid much attention to the musical Irene until I fell in love with Barbara Cook’s recording of this song, added to the 1970s revival of the show by Cook’s longtime music director, Wally Harper.
Take note, writers of musical theater: “I Want” songs don’t have to be whiny or plaintive.
