Mary Martin’s 1989 Kennedy Center Honor presentation, introduced by Bernadette Peters featuring a performance from Charlotte d’Amboise and company members of Jerome Robbins’ Broadway (recreating “I’m Flying from Peter Pan), a tribute from her son Larry Hagman and a South Pacific medley from the US Naval Academy Glee Club.
I almost watched this the other day when it popped up in the search for Peter Pan. And now that news has arrived of Larry Hagman’s passing, it feels even more appropriate to watch it today.
(And by the way, Mary’s reactions from her seat alone are worth the time investment in this video.)
Totally unrelated to my last post here and entirely related to the most recent post on Fuck Yeah Stephen Sondheim, one of my favorite “batshit crazy reinterpretations of a classic showtune” tracks ever is The Weather Girls singing “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair” from South Pacific.
